When a heat waves strike, it can be difficult to keep your home cool. Keep things cool by implementing the tips below.

#1 Close Off Other Rooms

During a heat wave, you don't need to cool off your entire house. You only need to cool off the parts of your house you are using. This will save you money on your cooling bill, and will help you keep your home at a comfortable temperature.

The easiest way to close off a room is to shut the windows and doors to that room, and not use that room during the day. You can also roll-up a towel and put it next to the door to keep the heat contained to that room. You can also shut the vent for the air conditioner for that room as well.

#2 Make Sure Your Air Filter Is Clean

Next, you need to make sure that your air filter is clean. If your air filter is dirty, it will cause your air conditioner to work harder than it needs to to keep your home cool. You don't want to stress out your air conditioning more than you need to during a heat wave, when you are going to be running your air conditioner for more hours than you normally would.

#3 Don't Turn Down Your AC

When a heat wave hits, many people want to turn down their air conditions even further to make their home cool. For example, if you keep your home regularly at 68 degrees, you shouldn't reduce the temperature down to 62 degrees. This is not going to make your home cooler. Instead, it is going to stress out your air conditioning as it strains to meet this lower temperature. It is best to keep your thermostat at the same temperature that you usually enjoy; this will stress out your air conditioner less as it works hard to keep your home at the regular cool temperature you enjoy.

#4 Utilize Ceiling Fans

Make sure that you utilize ceiling and box fans. Fans hardly use any energy to operate at all, and thus are very energy efficient ways of staying cool. The thing about fans is that they don't actually cool off the air. However, the movement of the air through your home will make the air feel cooler to you. It is also a great way to push cool air throughout your home and assist your air conditioner with circulating cool air throughout your home.

#5 Shade Your AC Unit

Finally, make sure that the outside portion of your air conditioning unit is located in the shade. By keeping your air conditioning unit in the shade, you can actually increase the efficiency of your air conditioning unit. Just make sure that you do not block the vents or prevent air from circulating around your air conditioning unit via your method of keeping your air conditioning unit shaded.
